La passion pour le hip hop old school, le rock classique et la musique électronique a mené à la création de Linkin Park par le batteur Rob Bourdon, le guitariste Brad Delson et le chanteur Mike Shinoda qui se sont connus à l'école secondaire. Peu de temps après la remise des diplômes, les trois compères rencontrent le DJ Jospeh Hahn et le bassiste Darren Farrell, Xero est né. Le groupe change de nom pour Hybrid Theory et devient par la suite Linkin Park quand Chester Bennington s'y joint en 1999.

Linkin Park commence à se produire dans le sud de la Californie et se fait offrir un contrat par Warner Bros à la fin de 1999. À l'automne 2000, la formation lance l'album « Hybrid Theory », un clin d'½il à son passé. Le disque remporte un succès phénoménal avec les simples « Crawling », « One Step Closer » et « In the End ».

Linkin Park s'impose comme un groupe infatigable se produisant à 324 reprises en 2001. Le travail investi n'est pas vain puisque « Hybrid Theory » figure parmi les meilleurs vendeurs de 2001 et décroche trois nominations lors du gala des Grammys en janvier 2002 et remporte celui de la Meilleure prestation Hard rock pour la pièce « Crawling ».

En 2002, Linkin Park lance « Reanimation », un album de remixes des pièces de « Hybrid Theory » de même que « In the End : Live & Rare », une compilation de matériel inédit et rare. Le groupe est de retour en studio et son second disque, « Meteora », paraît au printemps 2003.
